Safe at Home Campaign

Seniors Safe at Home

Elderly households are among our most vulnerable. Senior citizens struggle with fixed incomes, diminishing resources, and isolation—which impair their ability to complete necessary home repairs. A typical social security income for a low-income senior is around $10,000 per year.

Seniors Safe at Home sets out to make sure that no senior citizen has to wait for a critical home repair—while preserving a senior citizen’s assets and helping them age in place. Last year, Seniors Safe at Home helped 98 senior citizens with repairs and rehabs. Nearly 60 percent of the households we helped were home to seniors.

Children Safe at Home

More than one-third of the households AHIP helped last year were home to children under age 18. Research shows that kids who grow up in safe, physically secure homes are more likely to graduate from high school and more likely to become resilient, successful adults.

AHIP believes that no child should wake up in a house that fails them. Children Safe at Home sets out to make sure that every child in Charlottesville and Albemarle grows up in a home that is safe, secure, and healthy.

Neighbors Safe at Home

Right now, 315 Charlottesville and Albemarle households are on AHIP’s waiting list for critical home repairs. That’s more than 700 of our neighbors: kids, moms, dads, grandparents, working adults, disabled people, retired people. AHIP’s waiting list is a cross-section of our local community, and represents all of us. Many of the folks we encounter in our daily lives—retail workers, nursing aides, teacher’s aides, housekeepers, hospitality workers—go home to no heat, no hot water, leaking roofs, crumbling floors, and plumbing and electrical hazards.

AHIP has the experience, the know-how, and the tools at the ready. With the enthusiastic and generous support of the community, we will fix every single one.

2014 Campaign Goal $50,000

Currently 227 senior citizens in 186 households are on our wait list for urgent and critical repairs. AHIP is gearing up for our third year with community partners the Charlottesville Association of Realtors and Blue Ridge Home Builders Association to raise funds, work on projects and build awareness for this important mission. Since the beginning of this partnership, AHIP has been able to support 82 percent more emergency repair projects for seniors!
